The history of Oradour-sur-Glane
On 10 June 1944, during the German occupation, the SS Das Reich division invaded Oradour-sur-Glane. The German soldiers coldly massacred more than 600 inhabitants, including women and children, and set fire to the village.
The massacre at Oradour-sur-Glane remains a poignant reminder of the suffering inflicted during the Second World War.
After the war, France decided to preserve the village as a memorial to the horrors of the war and the Nazi occupation.
This makes Oradour-sur-Glane more than just a French village.
The destroyed village has been left as it was, with the exception of a few buildings restored to preserve the memory of this tragedy.
